Comparison of Applicable Scenarios and Costs for Renovation and Repair of Die Casting Molds
The mass production of die casting molds has reached the mid to late stage of service, and refurbishment and repair are one of the alternative solutions to new molds, but there are clear applicable boundaries, and Xinfeng Machinery has sorted out costs and risks.

1、 Types of damage suitable for refurbishment
Shallow cracking, slight aluminum corrosion, local collapse of parting surface, and local wear of inserts are suitable for refurbishment. The crack depth is less than 0.8mm, and there are no large areas of inclusions or defects in the main steel of the mold cavity. Production can be resumed after refurbishment. The renovation cost is generally only 25% -40% of the cost of opening a new mold, which is suitable for budget constrained and short-term production projects. The proportion of small and medium-sized factories in Southeast Asia and India choosing to renovate is higher.

2、 Failure situations that are not recommended for renovation
The crack depth exceeds 1.5mm, there are severe inclusions inside the steel, the mold cavity is deformed extensively, and there are multiple blockages and leaks in the cooling water circuit. The cost performance of renovation is extremely low. The appearance of the alloy wheel mold has a mirror like cavity, and it is difficult to restore the original polishing texture after large-area welding repair. The risk of pattern misalignment and color difference is high, and most of them are directly opened. Welding repair will change the local metallographic structure of the steel and reduce its thermal fatigue resistance.

3、 Disassembly of standard renovation process flow
Disassemble the mold, thoroughly remove oil and aluminum shavings, and mark the crack area with non-destructive testing; Polish and remove all cracks, and use matching hot work steel welding materials for surfacing; Heat treatment to relieve stress, precision machining, polishing, reassembly and pressure testing. The complete renovation cycle is 7-15 days, much shorter than the 25-40 day cycle for new mold opening. After renovation, the overall remaining lifespan of the mold is usually only 40% -60% of that of a brand new mold.

4、 Characteristics of Low Pressure Casting Mold Renovation
The failure of low pressure casting molds is mostly concentrated in the flushing areas of the riser, sealing surface, and gate. The main cavity cracks are rare, and most renovations only replace vulnerable components. The riser is a consumable part, and replacing it directly is more stable than repairing it with welding. The stability of refurbished low-pressure molds is generally better than that of refurbished die-casting molds.

5、 Key points for avoiding pitfalls in procurement decision-making
Some suppliers excessively promise to refurbish the lifespan, concealing deep steel defects. The refurbished die and mold must undergo non-destructive testing and mold verification, with agreed warranty mold times. The metal injection mold has a small and precise cavity, which is prone to deformation during welding and has almost no refurbishment value. After wear, the insert can be replaced directly. Google's "refurbish die casting mold" is suitable for inquiries related to the maintenance of existing production lines.

FAQ
How is the warranty for refurbished molds generally agreed upon? Most of them are guaranteed based on the number of molds, with a common warranty of 10000 to 30000 molds, which is much lower than that of new molds.

Will the welding position be more prone to cracking again? The stress concentration in the bonding area between the welding material and the substrate increases the probability of cracking again at the same location.

Can the mirror shaped cavity of the wheel hub be welded and refurbished? Shallow small defects are acceptable, but it is difficult to restore the mirror and pattern accuracy through large-area welding.

Should the renovation be re nitrided or coated? After grinding and welding, the original coating is completely removed, and after repair, a new coating can be applied.

Can the blocked waterway be renovated and unblocked? Minor scale can be cleared, but it is recommended to abandon renovation due to corrosion and perforation of the inner wall.

Is renovating molds suitable for long-term three shift mass production? Not recommended, priority is given to short-term orders for two shifts and intermittent production.

Why do we need to perform non-destructive testing before renovation? Identify internal microcracks that are invisible to the naked eye to avoid rapid failure after refurbishment.

Can MIM molds be refurbished after wear and tear? There is a high risk of deformation in the welding of small and fine cavities, so priority should be given to directly replacing the inserts.
